NCA Clamps Down on Radio Across Accra, Kumasi & Takoradi Over Licensing Breaches
Accra, Ghana — The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of Wontumi Radio’s operations in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, citing multiple regulatory infractions uncovered during a recent frequency audit. Wontumi was among more than 60 FM stations nationwide affected by the enforcement action. 3NewsCitiNewsroom.com
The regulatory breaches include operating without valid authorizations, failure to renew licences, unfulfilled provisional authorisation fees, and non-compliance with setup and technical requirements as
mandated under the Electronic Communications Act (Act 775) and associated regulations. Graphic OnlineCitiNewsroom.com
Reacting to the shutdown, Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George emphasized that the action was not politically motivated but aimed at enforcing order and accountability in the broadcasting sector. MyJoyOnline
However, President John Dramani Mahama quickly intervened, instructing the Ministry and the NCA to restore the broadcast rights of the affected stations—including Wontumi Radio—while granting a 30-day grace period to rectify the breaches.
