Tribute By Wife Of Late Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
The state funeral for the eight victims of the Sikaman helicopter crash on Friday, August 15, 2025, was marked by moments of profound grief, none more heartfelt than the tribute delivered by the wife of Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, one of the fallen military officers.
Standing before the coffins draped in Ghana’s national flag at the Accra International Conference Centre, she fought back tears as she honoured the memory of her late husband.
“You gave me the experience of being deeply understood, supported, and loved,” she began, her voice trembling with emotion.
A Husband, a Father, a Hero
Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, described by colleagues as a disciplined and selfless officer, was aboard the ill-fated Sikaman helicopter on August 6 alongside top government officials and security personnel. They were on an official mission to the Ashanti Region when the aircraft crashed in the Adansi Akrofrom District, claiming all eight lives.
In her tribute, Mrs. Mensah recalled the quiet strength and compassion that defined her husband’s character.
“You were my best friend, my confidant, my prayer partner, and my greatest supporter. Your love made me braver, your faith made me stronger, and your laughter brought light to our home,” she said.
Love That Will Endure
She spoke of the pain of losing not just a husband but also a life companion who shared her dreams and stood by her through every challenge.
“I will miss your early morning calls from duty, your gentle reminders to take care of myself, and the way you always made me believe I could face anything. Your absence has created a void nothing can fill,” she added.
Service to Nation Until the End
Sergeant Mensah served with distinction in the Ghana Air Force, and his death has been described as a great loss to the military and the nation. His wife emphasised that while the pain is unbearable, she takes comfort in knowing he died serving the country he loved.
“You wore your uniform with pride, and you lived every day ready to protect and defend. I am proud of you, Ernest, and I will carry your legacy in my heart forever,” she concluded, drawing tears from mourners in attendance.
Final Farewell
The funeral was attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President John Dramani Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, political leaders, military chiefs, and hundreds of citizens.
As her tribute ended, the hall was filled with solemn silence, broken only by the quiet sobs of family members and friends. Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah was later laid to rest with full military honours.
