The CONMEBOL Sudamericana match between Argentina’s Independiente and Chile’s Universidad de Chile descended into tragedy after violent clashes between rival supporters forced officials to suspend the game.
According to early reports, at least three people have been confirmed dead, while another remains in critical condition. Hundreds of others sustained injuries during the outbreak of violence, with eyewitnesses reporting scenes of chaos as police and emergency services struggled to restore order. Disturbingly, children were also caught up in the violence and are among those affected.

The confrontation erupted inside and around the stadium shortly after kickoff, with running battles between fans escalating into full-scale riots. Video footage circulating online shows supporters throwing objects, tearing down barriers, and clashing with security forces, creating a scene described by local media as “a war zone.”

CONMEBOL officials condemned the violence and announced the immediate suspension of the fixture, stressing that player and spectator safety could not be guaranteed under the circumstances. Authorities in both Argentina and Chile have since pledged thorough investigations into the incident, which has cast a dark shadow over South American football.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of violent episodes to plague the region’s game, reigniting urgent debates about fan safety, policing standards, and the responsibility of clubs and football authorities to prevent such disasters.
As families mourn the victims and hospitals work to treat the injured, questions are mounting over how a night meant for football turned into one of grief and loss.
