Arsenal produced a ruthless display at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, sweeping aside newly-promoted Leeds United 5-0 to extend their dominance over the Yorkshire club with a seventh successive victory.
The result not only maintained the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the season but also briefly lifted them to the top of the Premier League table, while Viktor Gyökeres marked his home debut with a memorable brace.
Arsenal Set the Tone Early
The home side began brightly, with captain Martin Ødegaard firing just wide before being forced off with an injury later in the half. Leeds threatened through Pascal Struijk, whose header from a corner was pushed over by David Raya, but Arsenal quickly stamped their authority.
Declan Rice’s pinpoint corner delivery was met by Jurrien Timber, who rose brilliantly to head into the far corner for the opener. Arsenal’s set-piece dominance, a key feature under Mikel Arteta, has now yielded 32 goals from corners since the start of the 2023/24 season — more than any other Premier League side.
Saka and Gyökeres Deliver
Timber turned provider just before half-time, slipping the ball to Bukayo Saka, who finished superbly with his weaker foot to double the lead.
Arsenal resumed the second half in relentless fashion, with summer signing Riccardo Calafiori threading a clever pass through to Gyökeres. The Swedish striker cut inside and rifled home at the near post for his first goal in Arsenal colours.
Although Saka’s injury moments later threatened to dampen the mood, the Gunners continued to press. Timber struck again from close range after a corner scramble, making it 4-0.
Dream Debut for 15-Year-Old Dowman
With the game secure, Arteta handed a league debut to 15-year-old Max Dowman. The teenager made an instant impression, winning a stoppage-time penalty which Gyökeres converted confidently to complete his brace.
Statement Victory
The win was Arsenal’s 43rd consecutive home match unbeaten against newly-promoted opponents, equalling a Premier League record. Leeds, who came into the fixture on a seven-game winning run, were thoroughly outclassed and saw their momentum halted in brutal fashion.
Jurrien Timber, who scored twice and assisted once, was named Flashscore Man of the Match.
