Akwatia By-Election: 10 Arrested, 9 Guns Seized in Police Security Crackdown
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested ten suspects and confiscated nine firearms in a series of special security operations in Akwatia, Eastern Region, ahead of the September 2 by-election.

According to police, the crackdown aims to curb the unlawful possession and use of firearms before, during, and after the polls. Weapons Seized

8 pump-action shotguns
1 locally manufactured single-barrel gun
Several rounds of live cartridges
Timeline of Arrests
22nd August 2025 – Police intercepted a vehicle near St Dominic Hospital, driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu. Officers discovered a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun with ammunition. Although Ofosu presented a valid licence, he was detained while verification continues.
On the same day at Akwatia Y-Junction, Joshua Amenuku was arrested with 15 live cartridges. A search at his home uncovered an ADLER TULPA pump-action gun and more ammunition.
Later that evening, a Toyota Hilux pick-up was stopped at the Boadua Livingstone checkpoint. Two men, Enoch Asiedu and Lu Youyan, a Chinese national, were arrested after police retrieved four cartridges. The ammunition was said to belong to their employer, identified as Mohammed, who is now on the run.
23rd August 2025 – At the same checkpoint, Pieterson Joseph was arrested with an Adler Tulpar pump-action gun and 46 round of ammunition, which he admitted owning.
That same day at Staff Village, Boadua, police intercepted a Toyota Tundra pick-up (WR 5535-13). Inside, they found three pump-action shotguns – a Pardus, a Huglu Atroe, and another unidentified weapon. The driver, Stephen Nkansah, admitted to owning two of the guns, claiming the third belonged to his chief. He is still in custody as investigations continue.
Police Assurance
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured residents that security will remain tight before, during, and after the by-election, promising swift action against anyone found with illegal weapons.
