Jihadist Attack in Burkina Faso Leaves 4 Militiamen Dead Near Ghana Border
Four members of a civilian militia were killed in Burkina Faso after armed jihadists launched a deadly assault near the country’s border with Ghana.
According to local security sources, the attack occurred late Saturday in the town of Soubakaniédougou, situated in Burkina Faso’s Cascades region. The victims, members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland (VDP), were ambushed while on patrol.
Reports indicate that heavily armed militants opened fire, leaving four of the VDP militiamen dead on the spot. Others managed to escape with injuries.
This latest assault highlights the growing threat of jihadist activities spreading across the West African Sahel into communities closer to Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo.
Since 2015, Burkina Faso has faced an upsurge in extremist violence, leaving thousands dead and forcing over two million people from their homes. Analysts warn that the militants are gradually extending their operations to border regions, raising serious security concerns for neighbouring countries.
Authorities in Burkina Faso say counter-terrorism operations are ongoing, with support from regional partners, to contain the insurgency.
