Okyere Baafi Apologizes Over Resignation Promise, Yet Insists He Won’t Step Down
New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi has formally apologized to Ghanaians for his resignation pledge made during the Akwatia by-election campaign—but stands firm that he will not resign from Parliament.
Speaking on AsaasePa 107.3 MHz, Baafi admitted that his comment—“If NPP loses, I will resign”—was made in the heat of the campaign to motivate his team, but acknowledged it was ill-advised.
“I apologize to Ghanaians for that. I only said it to energise my supporters, but upon reflection, it was a step too far,” he said Adomonline.com.
Baafi attributed his party’s defeat to alleged vote-buying by the NDC, claiming that on polling day, items like hair dryers, spraying machines, and cash amounts between GH¢500 and GH¢1,000 were used to sway voters.
“If politics continues this way, I won’t run again,” he warned. Asaase RadioAdomonline.com.
But his apology has not been accepted. NDC’s Deputy National Elections Director, Rashid Tanko-Computer, responded forcefully, insisting that Baafi must resign or be made to publicly apologize in Parliament for breaking his own vow.
“If he doesn’t resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously…” MyJoyOnline+1.
