GII Proposes Six-Month Limit on Political Campaigns to Curb Excesses
The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Awelana Addah, has called for a six-month cap on political campaigns in Ghana. The suggestion comes as part of a broader push to regulate political financing and rein in the spiraling costs of electioneering.
Speaking at the maiden National Dialogue held by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Accra, Addah emphasized that Ghana’s current political party framework lacks robust provisions to tackle extended campaign cycles and financial excesses. She proposed that clearly defined, legally embedded campaign periods would help anchor political activity in law.
To reinforce this stance, Addah disclosed that civil society groups are already working on a draft bill aimed at formalizing campaign financing regulations—covering both spending limits and campaign duration. The goal is to free political actors from the burden of sustaining expensive campaigns that often stretch well over two years.
