A violent confrontation in Okorase, a community near Adeiso in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region, has left three people, including the town’s Zongo Chief, with gunshot wounds in what authorities suspect is a deepening land dispute.
The victims have been identified as Sariki Aminu, the Zongo Chief of Okorase, and two unnamed residents who were injured while attempting to assist him.
Armed Men Storm Community
According to local leaders, the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Friday, shortly after Muslim congregants had completed afternoon prayers. Armed men, believed to be either land guards or operatives posing as national security officers, stormed the community demanding to see the Zongo Chief.
Eyewitnesses claim the men told the chief he was wanted at the police headquarters in Accra. However, when Sariki Aminu requested proof of identification, the armed visitors allegedly opened fire, striking him in the shoulder. Two residents who rushed to his side were also shot.
Reports of Arbitrary Arrests
The Amankrado of Okorase, Nana Kwadwo Arhin III, confirmed the incident and said a report was immediately lodged with the Adeiso District Police. However, tensions escalated hours later when another group of armed men—believed to be national security personnel—allegedly stormed the town again and arrested at least 15 residents without offering explanations.
Growing Fear Among Residents
The shootings and subsequent arrests have left the community in turmoil. Several frightened residents have abandoned their homes, fearing further attacks or reprisals.
Local chiefs and assembly members have issued an urgent appeal to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and President John Dramani Mahama to intervene swiftly to restore peace, protect lives, and investigate the true identities of the armed men behind the violence.
A Community on Edge
At the time of reporting, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, community members say the situation remains tense, with fears that the violence could escalate if authorities fail to act.
