Northern Region, Ghana – Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has revealed that it continues to rely on water pumps installed in 1972 to serve a population that has expanded from fewer than 100,000 to over 1.4 million people.
The Dalun Water Treatment Plant, the main facility supplying water to the region, currently produces just 35,000 cubic meters of water daily—far short of the 90,000 cubic meters required to meet the area’s growing needs.

During a tour of the plant by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Regional Chief Manager Steven Amihere Mensah highlighted the pressing challenges facing the facility. He pointed to the aging infrastructure and frequent power outages as major obstacles to providing consistent and safe drinking water.

“Our equipment has served the people for over five decades. Without urgent investment in modern pumps and a reliable power supply, residents will continue to experience intermittent water access,” Mr. Mensah warned.
JoyNews’ correspondent Martina Bugri, who was on the ground, reported that local communities are already feeling the impact, with intermittent water supply affecting households, schools, and businesses alike.
The GWL is calling for immediate government support to upgrade infrastructure and ensure sustainable water provision for the Northern Region.
