President John Dramani Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that he will offer a personal cash reward to the players of Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, in recognition of their commendable third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking at a public event, the former president applauded the team’s fighting spirit and resilience throughout the tournament, stating that their performance brought pride to the nation. Although he did not disclose the specific amount, Mr. Mahama said the financial token would serve as his way of appreciating their efforts and boosting morale.

“Our Black Queens have made Ghana proud. For their hard work and dedication, I will be giving them a personal token of appreciation,” he said.
The Black Queens battled their way to a bronze medal at the tournament, overcoming tough competition to reclaim a podium finish after years of near-misses on the continental stage. Their performance has reignited calls for greater investment in women’s football in Ghana.
President Mahama’s gesture has been widely praised by sports analysts and fans alike, who view it as a symbolic but important act of encouragement for women’s sports in the country—especially in an environment where female athletes often receive less attention and financial support than their male counterparts.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to officially comment on the former president’s promise, but the development adds to growing public support for the Black Queens following their success in the tournament.
