Accra, Ghana – The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has cautioned party members eyeing the 2028 presidential race to desist from early campaigning, stressing that the focus must remain on supporting President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic during his recent “Thank You” tour, Mr. Nketiah said it would be politically unwise for aspirants to begin positioning themselves for leadership when the government has not yet completed its first year in office.
“If you campaign to replace President Mahama when the government has not even attained a year in office and achieved its goals, then we are not serious as a political party,” he remarked.
He urged aspirants and party faithful to rally behind the president in his efforts to reset the economy and improve citizens’ welfare.
‘Thank You’ Tour and Rising Speculations
The NDC chairman’s September 17–19, 2025, tour of 16 constituencies in the Eastern Region has drawn speculation in political circles, with critics suggesting it could be a subtle attempt to position himself for a future presidential bid.
However, Mr. Nketiah rejected those claims, insisting that the tour was simply to show appreciation to party executives, cadres, grassroots organisers, and voters who contributed to the NDC’s 2024 election victory.
“Credibility is important in politics. I don’t have to wait for the next elections to visit the constituencies to thank them. I promised to return, and I am fulfilling that promise,” he said.
He emphasised that he was not an “armchair chairman,” but one who believed in leading from the front lines by actively engaging both party supporters and the wider electorate.
Focus on Governance, Not Succession
Addressing questions about when the NDC would elect its next flag bearer and national executives, Mr. Nketiah clarified that no decisions had yet been taken.
“Our preoccupation is to support President Mahama to deliver on his promises,” he said, adding that early campaign activities would be futile since delegates eligible to vote in internal elections could change by the time the party begins its processes.
He appealed to members to remain calm and disciplined, assuring them that opportunities for service within the party and government would gradually expand as the administration settles.
