Cadman Mills Warns: Cedi’s Recovery Hollow While Galamsey Ravages Country
Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has issued a strong warning to President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging urgent action against galamsey. Speaking on social media, Mills argued that the economic gains, especially the recent rebound of the cedi, are meaningless if people’s lives and environment continue to suffer.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“I refuse to pay for the accolades President Mahama and the NDC is receiving for the cedi’s recovery with my health or life.”
“Call it galamsey or ‘legal’ small-scale mining (when bankrolled by the politically connected). It is killing us.”I REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE ACCOLADES PRESIDENT MAHAMA AND THE NDC IS RECEIVING FOR THE CEDI’S RECOVERY WITH MY HEALTH OR LIFE.
Call it Galamsey or “legal” small scale mining (when bankrolled by the politically connected). It is killing us. #StopGalamseyNow pic.twitter.com/jqdY9HE9z0— Cadman Atta Mills (@CadmanAttaMills) September 14, 2025
Mills pointed to the increasing pollution of water bodies, loss of fertile farmland, and escalating health risks for communities across mining regions. He expressed frustration that even government-sanctioned small-scale mining, when influenced by powerful sponsors, produces results indistinguishable from illegal galamsey in their environmental harm.
He implored President Mahama to go beyond rhetoric, demanding decisive policy actions to halt all forms of destructive mining. Mills stressed that neither life nor health should be traded for economic headlines or currency gains.
Why This Matters
| Issue | Implication |
|---|---|
| Human & Environmental Cost | Highlighting that economic metrics mean little when vital ecosystems and human wellbeing are sacrificed. |
| Accountability & Governance | Raises questions over how “legal” mining is regulated and whether it masks harmful activity. |
| Public Pressure for Policy Action | Adds momentum to calls for stronger enforcement, transparency, and possibly emergency measures to check galamsey. |
