Dick Durbin was born in Illinois and rose to become the state’s 47th and senior senator. He was first elected to the Senate in 1996, and he has been re-elected in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020.

Dick Durbin was born and raised in n East St. Louis, Illinois.  His father, William Durbin, was of Irish-American descent, while his mother, Anna, was of Lithuanian descent.

About his education, Durbin attended and graduated from Assumption High School in East St. Louis in 1962. He worked at a meatpacking facility while in high school.

In 1966, he graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service with a B.S. Durbin worked for Senator Paul Douglas’s unsuccessful reelection campaign in 1966 as an intern during his final year of college.

Durbin graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969 and was admitted to the Illinois bar the following year.

Durbin opened a law firm in Springfield after graduating from law school. From 1969 to 1972, he was the legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon, and from 1972 to 1982, he was the legal counsel to the Illinois State Senate Judiciary Committee.
