Accra, Ghana – August 28, 2025: Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.
The submission, which took place at the NPP headquarters in Accra, was marked by strong party presence and enthusiastic support from loyalists. Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, and his 2024 running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO).
Call for Unity and Prosperity
In his address, Dr. Bawumia pledged to prioritize economic growth, job creation, and cost-of-living reductions if given the nod once again to lead the NPP. He emphasized that the party must remain united to retain political power and accelerate national development.
“The NPP has always been the party of progress, innovation, and opportunity,” Dr. Bawumia said. “We must continue to build on these foundations and work together as one family to deliver prosperity for all Ghanaians.”

Supporters Laud Digital Transformation Legacy
Across social media platforms, many of his supporters praised his leadership qualities and highlighted his achievements in the digitalization of Ghana’s economy, which they argue has transformed public service delivery and strengthened financial inclusion.
Critics Question Economic Record
However, not all reactions have been positive. Critics within and outside the party questioned his economic management track record, pointing to Ghana’s recent fiscal challenges under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration. With the NPP’s internal contest expected to be fiercely competitive, his candidacy is likely to reignite debates over his stewardship of the economy.
A Heated Contest Ahead
The NPP is preparing for what analysts predict will be one of its most hotly contested flagbearer races, as key figures are expected to enter the fray. Dr. Bawumia’s early filing signals his determination to consolidate support and rally the party base ahead of the 2028 elections.
