Traders Urged to Cut Prices as Cedi Strengthens – GUTA Appeals for Consumer Relief
Accra, Ghana — The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has issued a powerful appeal to traders across the country, urging them to reduce prices of goods and services to reflect the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
In a statement signed by GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng, the trade body welcomed the cedi’s improved performance against major foreign currencies and called on its members to pass on the benefits to consumers in the form of fairer pricing.
“The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) wishes to appeal to the trading community to adjust prices of goods and services to share the significant gains made by the appreciation of the cedi … and bring some relief to the consuming public,” the statement read, as reported by Citi Newsroom. Dr. Obeng emphasized that the healthier exchange rate environment offers an opportunity for traders to rebuild trust with their customers and demonstrate ethical business conduct.
“We do not operate in isolation. Business depends on turnover, and if people cannot afford to buy, we suffer too … The cedi’s performance … gives some room for price adjustments, and where possible, traders should act in good faith.” Graphic Online
However, the practical challenges of lowering prices were acknowledged. Some traders, particularly those still holding stock purchased when the cedi was weaker, noted that they cannot immediately adjust prices due to lingering higher costs. Supply chain dynamics also contributed to delays in price adjustments. Citinewsroom
Beyond the ethical case, Dr. Obeng argued that reducing prices is also economically prudent, as it helps maintain sales momentum and avoids hampering turnover in a competitive market. Graphic Online
