Gyakye Quayson is going to jail – Says KT Hammond

Gyakye Quayson is going to jail, according to KT Hammond.

Kobina Tahir (KT) Hammond, the minister for trade and industry, has stated that James Gyakye Quayson, the member of parliament for Assin Central, has had his fate decided.

He claimed that Gyakye Quayson would be sentenced to prison similarly to Adamu Dramani Sakande, a former member of parliament for Bawku Central, who was locked up for fabricating his Burkinabe and British citizenships.

On Monday, July 4, 2023, KT Hammond said in an interview with Oyerepa TV at Parliament that Adamu Sakande should go to prison since his case is essentially the same as Gyakye Quayson’s.

“There is a concept known as precedent in the legal system; the same thing happened to Adamu Sakande. The same NDC (National Democratic Congress) lawmakers who expelled Sakande from parliament and sued him also brought him to this house. He was detained; he later passed away and was buried. The situation is the same.

They are causing a lot of commotion over his inauguration. I asked Dominic Ayine, a former deputy attorney general, to inform Mr. Quayson that this had happened before at this residence. He needs to get out of here before going to jail.

There is precedent because this case is similar to that of Adamu Sakande. Due to his dual citizenship, Quayson was also sentenced to prison. Having given up his other citizenship, Quayson is now exclusively a Ghanaian. But the laws he broke in the past are what we are discussing,” he stated in Twi.

Adansi Asokwa MP KT Hammond also criticized the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, for opposing the Supreme Court decision that resulted in Quayson’s removal as an MP and for urging the state to abandon its criminal investigation of the Assin North MP.
