Accra Hearts of Oak claimed the 2025 Democracy Cup after defeating city rivals Great Olympics 1-0 in a fiercely contested final on Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The breakthrough came in the 70th minute, when Kwesi Asmah found the back of the net with the game’s only goal, sealing the Phobians’ maiden triumph in the competition.
The victory not only hands Hearts the historic trophy but also secures them a spot in a special invitational mini-tournament scheduled to be played later this year in the United States.
The clash attracted a high-profile audience, with President John Dramani Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, all in attendance—highlighting the symbolic significance of the Democracy Cup.
The tournament, initiated by Parliament of Ghana, was established to celebrate the country’s enduring commitment to parliamentary democracy while using football as a tool to promote national unity.
Hearts of Oak, who lost the maiden edition to rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium, redeemed themselves with this year’s triumph.
With the silverware now secured, coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and his charges will shift focus to the upcoming Ghana Premier League season, beginning with a home opener against Hohoe United on Friday, September 12.
