National Cathedral: Architect David Adjaye hated for his success – Mustapha Hameed

A vocal member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mustapha Hameed is of the opinion that Architect David Adjaye, the Architect for the National Cathedral, is hated for being successful.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Hameed, who is respected for his intellectual prowess, wrote: “They hate David Adjaye because he is successful! How’s that his fault?”

Mr Adjaye has come under criticism following revelations that Government has single-source many architectural designs to him for execution, and that he has received whopping sums of money for his work. But for Mr Hameed, the criticism is borne out of hatred.

His comment has been greeted with mixed reactions.

“A man of your intellect, should not sink into the kind of gutters you sink in Mr Hameed. A lot of young people admire you. Be different.
David Adjaye got the Trade Fair contract on sole sourcing. He got the Marine Drive project on sole sourcing. He got the Cathedral project on sole sourcing. He got the Agenda 111 design job on sole sourcing.

Section 40 and 72 of the Public Procurement Act provide the exceptional circumstances for sole-sourcing which have all been violated.

He was only inducted into the fraternity of Ghanaian architects only in 2019 which means for most of the sole-sourced architectural works he did for the State, he wasn’t qualified per regulations governing the architectural practice in Ghana…,” Abdul Hameed disagreed.

David Adjaye is a British Ghanaian Architect who has done praiseworthy work across the world.
