0

Tamale, Northern Region – The MTN Ghana Foundation has taken a bold step in transforming lives in Northern Ghana, investing GHC 2 million to empower youth and persons with disabilities (PWDs) through its flagship “MTN Enterprise Support Program.”

In partnership with Innohub and Fidelity Bank, the initiative targets youth-led businesses, women entrepreneurs, and PWDs, tackling barriers to funding, creating jobs, and stimulating local economic growth. Beyond financial support, the program emphasizes social inclusion, financial independence, and entrepreneurial skill-building for marginalized groups.

In Tamale, over 160 business owners, primarily PWDs, received support after excelling in a rigorous pitch competition. At a vibrant awards ceremony, Mohammed Tahiru, a member of the Ghana Society of the Physically Challenged, praised the initiative:

“MTN has broken the myth that persons with disabilities can only beg on the streets. They taught us how to package our products, attract customers, and save for the future. With this support, I believe many of our financial challenges will be solved in the coming years.”

Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager at MTN Ghana, highlighted that the Foundation’s commitment goes beyond funding:

“We aim to equip beneficiaries with the skills and resources to sustain and grow their businesses. Innohub provides technical training, while MTN provides the financial backing needed to succeed.”

Maame Serwaa Amoakohene, Chief of Staff at Innohub, emphasized the shared vision behind the partnership:

“Our goal is to ensure women, youth, and PWDs become financially viable and are not left behind in Ghana’s development process.”

The program underscores MTN Ghana Foundation’s dedication to inclusivity and economic empowerment, reaffirming its role in fostering entrepreneurship and supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations.

Police break up ring trafficking Kenyans to fight for Russia in Ukraine

Authorities in Kenya have arrested a suspect accused of coordinating the illegal trafficking of Kenyan nationals to Russia, amid growing concerns over the rising number of citizens being lured abroad under false job promises.

The suspect appeared in court, where a judge authorized a 10-day detention while police complete their investigations. Officials said the arrest followed a coordinated multi-agency operation targeting a criminal network extorting huge sums from desperate job seekers.

Police revealed that 22 Kenyans were found in an apartment in Athi River “awaiting processing to Russia.” The victims reported that the syndicate had promised them employment opportunities in Moscow, only to recruit them for service in the Russian military in Ukraine.

Investigators said victims signed contracts with an unnamed overseas employment agency, committing to pay up to $18,000 for visas, travel, accommodation, and other logistics, with deposits of $1,500 already collected from some individuals. Once recruited, many return home injured, traumatized, or, in some cases, never return at all. Two recent returnees are currently recovering in a city hospital.

The incident comes amid reports of other Kenyans being trafficked abroad under similar circumstances. A young athlete was recently found in Ukraine, claiming he was deceived into joining the Russian army.

A senior Kenyan foreign ministry official confirmed that the government is actively following up reports of nationals reportedly held as prisoners of war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s spokesperson, Petro Yatsenko, noted that many African states show little interest in repatriating their citizens held in POW camps.

Authorities have urged Kenyans to exercise caution when considering overseas job offers, warning against unscrupulous recruitment schemes and emphasizing the legal consequences of involvement in human trafficking.

Former NPP Executives in Ashanti Endorse Dr. Adutwum During Hope Tour

0

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister and a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, received a strong show of support from former party executives in the Ashanti Region on Friday. The endorsement came as part of his “Hope Tour,” aimed at engaging delegates ahead of the party’s upcoming internal elections.

Addressing the gathering at the Mampong zone, Adutwum reiterated his commitment to a clean and respectful campaign. “I will not allow anyone on my team to insult or malign others. My focus is to share my vision with the delegates and appeal to their conscience,” he said.

Former executives expressed confidence in Adutwum’s leadership abilities, praising his integrity, dedication, and vision for the party. “You’ve proven you’re the best to lead our party to victory,” one delegate remarked, echoing the sentiments of many attendees.

Adutwum emphasized the importance of unity and warned against superficial gestures of reconciliation. “After the contest, we must work together in unity—not by setting up reconciliation committees after the damage is done, but by running a clean and respectful campaign from the start,” he said.

The aspirant dismissed attempts to tarnish his reputation, vowing that his campaign would remain free, fair, transparent, and focused on ideas rather than personal attacks.

With backing from influential party figures in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Adutwum’s Hope Tour gains momentum as he seeks to rally support among delegates nationwide.

Supreme Court Temporarily Allows Trump Administration to Withhold $4 Billion in Foreign Aid

0

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration a temporary green light to withhold $4 billion in foreign aid appropriated by Congress, in a high-stakes dispute over presidential control of government spending. The ruling is a preliminary measure while litigation over the issue continues.

In a brief order, the court’s conservative majority sided with the administration, concluding that the president’s flexibility in foreign affairs outweighed “the potential harm” to aid recipients. The justices stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as a final ruling on the merits of the case.

Three liberal justices—Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson—dissented, arguing that the case was too consequential to be resolved on an emergency basis. Justice Kagan warned that the interim order would prevent the $4 billion from reaching foreign aid organizations, regardless of the ultimate outcome.

“This result further erodes separation of powers principles that are fundamental to our constitutional order,” said Nicolas Sansone, attorney for the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, one of the nonprofit organizations challenging the freeze. “It will also have a grave humanitarian impact on vulnerable communities throughout the world.”

The dispute centers on an executive order issued by President Trump on his first day in office, which paused foreign aid spending pending a review to ensure alignment with his foreign policy priorities. The administration has proposed rescinding the appropriated funds, arguing that unless Congress acts, the money would expire at the end of the fiscal year.

The aid includes billions designated for global food security, trade capacity-building programs, and support for victims of torture. Nonprofits argue that the administration’s approach violates Congress’s constitutional authority over spending.

The case has reached the Supreme Court multiple times since Trump returned to office, with prior emergency requests shaping interim rulings on immigration, military service, and regulatory protections. Friday’s order, issued by the six-justice conservative majority, allows the administration to pause aid while negotiations and litigation continue.

In their dissent, the liberal justices emphasized that the Impoundment Control Act does not shield the administration from lawsuits challenging the withholding of appropriated funds. “But that is just the price of living under a Constitution that gives Congress the power to make spending decisions through the enactment of appropriations laws,” Justice Kagan wrote.

The ruling underscores ongoing tensions between executive authority and Congress over fiscal control, with wide-reaching implications for foreign aid and domestic governance.

Dr. Adutwum Pledges Clean Campaign Ahead of NPP Flagbearer Contest

0

Former Education Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has committed to running a clean and respectful campaign, promising delegates in the Ashanti Region that personal attacks and insults would have no place in his team’s approach.

Speaking on Friday at the Mampong zone during his “Hope Tour,” Dr. Adutwum told former party executives that his focus would remain on sharing his vision and appealing to the delegates’ conscience.

“I will not allow anyone on my team to insult or malign others. My focus is to share my vision with the delegates and appeal to their conscience,” he said. “Anyone who truly believes they can win this election will not resort to insults.”

Unity Over Empty Gestures
Dr. Adutwum emphasised the importance of upholding unity and integrity within the party, cautioning against superficial reconciliation efforts after internal divisions have already caused damage.

“After the contest, we must work together in unity — not by setting up reconciliation committees after the damage is done, but by running a clean and respectful campaign from the start,” he stressed.

Rejecting Smear Tactics
Addressing attempts to discredit his character, Dr. Adutwum dismissed the actions, affirming that such efforts would not succeed.

“I am committed to a campaign devoid of insults — one that is free, fair, transparent, and worthy of our great party. If we uphold these values at every level, we will emerge stronger and more united,” he said.

The comments underscore Dr. Adutwum’s intention to prioritise integrity, respect, and transparency as he vies for the NPP’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2025 elections.

Ex-Arsenal striker dies after injury during game

0

Tributes have poured in following the death of former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar, who passed away at the age of 21.

Vigar, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, joined the club at 14 after being scouted from his hometown side Hove Rivervale FC. He progressed through the youth ranks, scoring 17 goals in his debut season and earning a scholarship for the 2020–21 season. Despite a serious hamstring injury in his first year as a scholar, Vigar returned strong, scoring four goals in 18 under-18 appearances and signing professional terms at the end of the 2021–22 season.

Arsenal described him as “quick, powerful and fiercely determined,” praising his versatility across forward positions and occasional defensive roles. The club said he would always be remembered “for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club, and a character beloved by teammates and coaches alike.”

Following his time at Arsenal, Vigar had spells with Derby County, Eastbourne Borough, Hastings United, and Chichester City. He made 32 appearances for Eastbourne while on loan from Arsenal during the 2023–24 season and also spent the latter half of the 2022–23 season with Derby County’s Under-21 squad.

All his former clubs have expressed shock and grief. Derby County stated: “All at Derby County are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Vigar. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Hastings United said: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Billy Vigar. We will always remember his time at the club with fondness.” Eastbourne Borough added: “Both footballing and non-footballing staff are shocked and deeply saddened at the news, and our thoughts are with Billy’s family.”

The FA also extended condolences, sending “heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, loved ones and everyone at Chichester City FC at this incredibly difficult time.”

Chichester City confirmed the news on Thursday morning and announced that their upcoming match against Lewes would be postponed and rescheduled.

Calls Grow to Suspend Israel from International Football Amid Genocide Allegations in Gaza

0

Since the United Nations commission of inquiry formally declared that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, mounting pressure has emerged for the country to be suspended from international football competitions.

Israel’s national team is currently participating in European qualifiers for next summer’s men’s FIFA World Cup, while Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv competes in the Europa League.

The BBC has learned from a senior football federation official that multiple nations are pushing for a vote to potentially remove Israel from European football, with UEFA’s leadership reportedly prepared to act. On Friday, the Turkish Football Association formally demanded Israel be banned, while a group of 48 athletes signed a joint letter calling for the country’s suspension.

The Times reports that a vote could take place as soon as next week, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu campaigns against it. Meanwhile, the US State Department has vowed to resist any attempt to bar Israel from World Cup qualification, which will largely be hosted in the United States.

How Would a Vote Work?

Major decisions in European football are made by UEFA’s executive committee, which oversees governance, finances, and competition rules. The committee comprises 20 officials: 16 elected members representing national football federations, two from the European Club Association (ECA), and one from the European Leagues organisation.

Emergency meetings are not typically publicized, and votes generally remain confidential. A simple majority of 11 out of 20 members is required for any decision to pass. If approved, a suspension would take effect immediately, barring Israel from participating in UEFA competitions, including World Cup qualifiers.

Who Would Decide?

Among the 16 elected members, Israel is represented by Moshe Zuares. Other members hail from countries including Spain, Norway, Albania, and Armenia, whose governments have issued pro-Palestine statements. However, aside from Turkey, no other football associations have publicly indicated a stance.

The ECA’s leadership is influential. Its head, Nasser Al-Khelaifi—also president of Paris Saint-Germain and chair of BeIN Media Group—has previously criticized Israeli actions in Doha but has made no public comment on the suspension debate. His fellow ECA representative, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, is CEO of Atletico Madrid, while European Leagues representative Claudius Schafer is Swiss.

A decision by UEFA could have immediate ramifications for Israel’s international football participation, igniting further political controversy in a region already fraught with tension.

US Lifts Visa Restrictions on Ghana, Restores Five-Year Multiple-Entry Privileges

0

Ghana has scored a major diplomatic victory as the United States has officially lifted the visa restrictions it imposed on the country in July 2025.

The decision restores eligibility for Ghanaians to secure five-year multiple-entry visas, along with other enhanced consular privileges.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development on Friday, September 26, after receiving confirmation from US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges. This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote in a Facebook post.

Months of Negotiation Pay Off

The reversal follows months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington. The restrictions, which had limited Ghanaians to a maximum three-month single-entry visa, were introduced in July over concerns about visa overstays, particularly among students.

By reinstating the previous visa regime, the US has signaled renewed confidence in Ghana’s commitment to addressing the issues that led to the sanctions.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The decision has been widely hailed as a positive step toward strengthening Ghana–US relations. Analysts say the move could boost travel, educational opportunities, and business partnerships between the two countries.

Government Declares Forest Reserves, Rivers ‘Security Zones’ in Intensified Anti-Galamsey Fight

Government Declares Forest Reserves, Rivers ‘Security Zones

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has declared all forest reserves and river bodies in Ghana as Security Zones to be protected at all costs as part of government’s uncompromising crackdown on illegal mining (galamsey).

He made the announcement at the closing ceremony of a week-long intensive training programme for personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in Sunyani.

Major Gains So Far

The Minister praised NAIMOS for its successes since its establishment in June, including the arrest of more than 1,000 illegal miners, the repossession of nine forest reserves previously taken over by illegal operators, and the confiscation of over 900 water pumps — which have since been redirected to the Ministry of Agriculture for irrigation support.

“These are not mere statistics. They are victories; victories for our land, for our water, and for our people,” Mr. Buah said.

Permanent Deployment in ‘Security Zones’

He described the training as a convergence of purpose, sharpening skills and strengthening cohesion among personnel drawn from the Ghana Army, Police Service, Immigration Service, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

Outlining a five-pronged government strategy — strict enforcement, engagement and education, provision of alternative livelihoods, technological innovation, and institutional coordination — Mr. Buah warned that any recalcitrant entrants into the newly declared Security Zones would be treated as “enemies of the state.”

“You are the sharpened tip of the spear. Any recalcitrant entrant into these declared Security Zones is not merely a trespasser; they are an enemy of the state and are to be treated as such. You are to be firm, resolute, and ruthless against those who seek to profit from the destruction of our common heritage,” he charged.

The Minister confirmed that NAIMOS personnel will be permanently deployed in forest reserves and along river bodies to provide sustained protection against illegal mining.

‘We Cannot Fail’

He urged task force members to embody vigilance, integrity, and courage, stressing that the President and Ghanaians are relying on them to safeguard the nation’s environment for future generations.

“We cannot fail, and we will not fail,” he declared.

The NAIMOS training, which included weapons handling, intelligence coordination, and counter-IED awareness, marks a pivotal scale-up in government’s anti-galamsey strategy aimed at ensuring responsible and sustainable mining practices nationwide.
