Accra/Spain — Ghanaian international Thomas Partey has completed a move to Spanish side Villarreal CF, signing a two-year contract that marks his return to La Liga, five years after departing Atlético Madrid.
The 32-year-old midfielder joins the Yellow Submarine on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with English Premier League side Arsenal FC, where he spent four seasons.
Partey’s return to Spain has been widely welcomed by Villarreal supporters and La Liga observers alike, who remember his combative and intelligent midfield displays during his time under Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid. He was a key part of the Rojiblancos’ setup before making a high-profile move to North London in 2020.
His tenure at Arsenal was plagued by recurrent injuries, although he remained a fan favorite when fit, known for his defensive prowess, passing range, and leadership on the pitch.
Villarreal, who are aiming to strengthen their midfield ahead of a European campaign, view Partey’s signing as a major coup. The club has described the move as part of a broader effort to add experience and steel to their engine room as they push for a top-four La Liga finish.
Thomas Partey is expected to wear the number 5 jersey and could make his debut in Villarreal’s opening league match in mid-August.
The move also comes as a boost for Ghana ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Partey expected to regain consistent playing time and sharpness in Spain’s top flight.
