Tottenham Hotspur underlined their bright start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with a commanding 2–0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, a result that not only ended a six-game winless run away from home but also exposed worrying cracks in Pep Guardiola’s side.
Both teams arrived on the back of emphatic opening-day wins—City sweeping aside Wolverhampton Wanderers 4–0, while Spurs dismantled Burnley 3–0. The champions were expected to dominate on home turf, yet Tottenham’s record of resilience in Manchester proved prophetic as Thomas Frank’s pragmatic blueprint delivered a deserved result.
Spurs Seize First-Half Control
The early exchanges hinted at City dominance, with forward Omar Marmoush repeatedly testing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Egyptian international came close on three occasions, including one gilt-edged chance where Vicario produced a smart save as Marmoush broke through on goal.
But while Guardiola’s side pressed, Tottenham absorbed pressure and struck clinically on the counter. A flick from Mohamed Kudus released Richarlison, who squared for Brennan Johnson to calmly slot home the opener. Minutes later, Spurs doubled their lead, courtesy of City’s own miscalculation. Goalkeeper James Trafford attempted to play short under heavy pressure, only for Richarlison to pounce. João Palhinha rifled home the loose ball for his first Tottenham goal, sending the visitors into half-time with a commanding 2–0 advantage.
Defensive Steel and Frustrated City
The second half offered little respite for City. Tottenham remained disciplined, neutralising the hosts’ attacking threats while occasionally threatening on the break. Johnson squandered a golden chance to extend the lead after choosing to shoot rather than square to a teammate, but in truth, Spurs never looked in danger.
City enjoyed sustained spells of possession late on, yet their creativity faltered in the final third. Tottenham’s backline, marshalled by a disciplined midfield, held firm to secure a second successive clean sheet of the season.
Guardiola’s Bogey Team Strikes Again
The result extends an unwanted record for Pep Guardiola—Tottenham have now inflicted more defeats on the Spaniard than any other side in his managerial career, with this marking his 10th loss against the North London club.
For Spurs, it was another tactical triumph under Thomas Frank, who has guided his new side to six points from six without conceding a goal. City, by contrast, appear a shadow of their once-dominant selves, their early vulnerabilities leaving Guardiola with urgent questions to answer as the season gathers pace.
