Villarreal President Defends Thomas Partey: “We Must Be Cautious and Wait for Justice
Accra, Ghana – August 14, 2025
Villarreal CF president Fernando Roig has called for patience and respect for due process in the case of Ghana Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey, who is currently facing multiple rape and sexual assault charges in the United Kingdom.
Speaking to Spanish media following the player’s controversial debut for Villarreal, Roig urged fans and the public to uphold the presumption of innocence until a court delivers a verdict.
“The player is undergoing legal proceedings. He maintains his innocence and denies the charges against him. The club upholds the presumption of innocence, and it will be the responsibility of the English courts to clarify the facts. At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected,” Roig stated.”
The Villarreal boss also addressed the hostile reception Partey received during a recent friendly against Aston Villa, clarifying that the jeers came primarily from visiting English supporters.
“We must be cautious and wait for justice. Let’s not judge prematurely. Thomas has the right to do his job until there is a conviction,” he added.
Serious Legal Battle Ahead
Partey, 32, is charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women, with alleged incidents taking place between 2021 and 2022. The Ghanaian international appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5 and was granted conditional bail. His next hearing is set for September 2 at the Old Bailey in London.
The midfielder joined Villarreal on a one-year deal earlier this month after leaving Arsenal at the end of his contract in June. His agreement reportedly contains a clause allowing the club to terminate the contract if he is found guilty.
Public Reaction Divided
The signing has sparked mixed reactions across Spain, the UK, and Ghana. While some fans have welcomed the move for a player with proven experience at the highest level, others have criticised the timing and moral implications of the transfer. Online campaigns such as #NoAThomasPartey have trended in opposition to his signing.
Villarreal, however, has reiterated its condemnation of all forms of violence and discrimination, while stressing that its decision is grounded in legal principles and not public pressure.
Ghanaian Spotlight
Back home, the case has reignited debates over how allegations against high-profile athletes should be handled—particularly when national pride and global reputation are at stake. Partey remains a key figure in the Black Stars’ midfield setup, and the outcome of his legal battle could have significant implications for both his club and international career.
