Accra, Ghana — August 3, 2025 — The Volta Region’s commanding 90.12% vote in favor of President John Dramani Mahama during Ghana’s 2024 general elections was not a product of political tradition, but a deliberate and confident endorsement of experienced leadership and a clear development agenda. This was the central message delivered by Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu during a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House on Thursday.
The visit, which included members of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, was aimed at strengthening the region’s partnership with the new administration and discussing pathways for accelerated regional development.
According to Hon. Gunu, the region’s unflinching support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer was founded on three pillars: trust in Mahama’s leadership, faith in the NDC’s policy agenda, and a legacy of tangible development under past NDC administrations.
“We were inspired by the unmatched leadership experience and proven track record of President Mahama — a statesman who understands the soul of this nation and has consistently delivered when it mattered most,” Hon. Gunu stated.
He noted that the NDC’s 2024 manifesto went beyond campaign rhetoric, providing a “contract of purpose” that addressed the unique developmental aspirations of the Volta Region. The document included 33 targeted projects across sectors such as infrastructure, education, job creation, and industrial development.
“We recognized the seriousness of that document. It wasn’t just promises — it was a roadmap. And we responded not with noise, but with numbers,” he added.
Gunu further asserted that the Volta Region’s political consciousness remains strongly linked to developmental memory, emphasizing that successive NDC governments have historically delivered key progress in the region.

Chiefs Laud Mahama, Present Development Priorities
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, also spoke during the meeting, commending President Mahama for prioritizing the region since his electoral victory.
He applauded the President’s symbolic choice of Volta as the first destination on his nationwide “thank-you” tour, as well as his appointment of several indigenes to strategic government positions.
Togbe Hodo highlighted progress in macroeconomic stabilization, noting improvements in the strength of the cedi, fuel price moderation, and the government’s proactive efforts in curbing inflation.
He further praised recent national initiatives such as the National Education Forum, along with budgetary allocations for major Volta road projects in the mid-year fiscal review. However, he emphasized the need for timely implementation.
“Given that these are multi-year projects, we pray they are started in time and completed during his current tenure,” he remarked.
The traditional leaders also presented a list of pressing regional issues requiring urgent intervention, including:
-
Completion of Keta Port and Ho Airport
-
Construction of inland immigration posts at Asikuma and Sogakope
-
Revival of the Eastern Corridor road project
-
Strengthening of sea defense systems in Agavedzi and other coastal towns
-
Expanded support for the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to boost training and reduce youth unemployment
They further requested budgeted capacity-building programs for traditional councils and legal guidance to ensure efficient traditional participation in the Feed Ghana Project.
“We as chiefs will continue to support your government with ideas and suggestions in order to reset and move this country forward,” Togbe Hodo assured.
President Mahama, in response, expressed his appreciation for the region’s continued faith in his leadership and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering inclusive development across all regions, with the Volta Region remaining a strategic priority.
